The Belgian Resuscitation Council emphasizes in its latest communication some important changes in the resuscitation guidelines. The updated recommendations should help both laypeople and professional aid workers to act faster and more effectively in the event of a cardiac arrest.

First check consciousness and immediately call 112
One of the most important changes is the order of action. Where previously multiple checks were performed before calling the emergency services, the new guideline asks to immediately check consciousness and call 112 right away. Only then is breathing checked.
The reason for this: recognizing abnormal or 'false' breathing appears to be difficult for bystanders. The 112 operators can help to correctly assess this situation during the call and, in the meantime, provide instructions for resuscitation.

New method for infant resuscitation
For babies, there is now a clear preference for resuscitation with two thumbs. This method replaces the previous choice between two thumbs or the combination of index and middle finger. The uniform approach should reduce confusion and improve the quality of chest compressions.

112BE-app is recommended
The ESPPW advises citizens to install the 112BE-app. This app automatically sends additional information to the emergency services, such as location data, which can speed up and optimize the intervention.

Fast response, but low survival rate: bystanders play a crucial role
Belgium is known for its exceptionally fast professional interventions. Nevertheless, the survival rate for cardiac arrest remains low: only 11% survive. This contrasts with countries where bystander first aid response is more developed.
According to the ESPPW, this shows how important it is that citizens have basic knowledge of resuscitation and, above all, dare to intervene. Quick action, CPR skills, and immediately alerting emergency services make a significant difference.

The organisation therefore emphasizes the importance of training and encourages companies and citizens to regularly participate in resuscitation classes.

“Every second counts – and every citizen can make a difference.”
