Why is attention to biological agents so important?

Biological agents, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, are present everywhere, including in the workplace. In certain sectors, such as healthcare, cleaning, waste processing, or agriculture, the risk of exposure is obvious. But even in office environments, microorganisms can cause problems, for example, through poorly maintained ventilation systems or damp spots. Invisible exposure can lead to allergies, infections, and other serious health complaints, which underlines the need for a sound prevention policy.

Benefits of good control

A proactive approach to biological agents ensures a healthier and safer workplace.

  • Health protection: Preventing exposure reduces the risk of infectious diseases (such as flu or covid-19), allergies, and respiratory problems.

  • Reduction of absenteeism: A healthy work environment with good air quality and hygiene helps prevent the spread of germs, leading to fewer absences.

  • Improved productivity: Employees who are in a healthy environment feel better, can concentrate better, and are more productive.

  • Peace of mind and legal certainty: You demonstrate that you take the risks seriously and comply with legal obligations regarding the protection of your staff.

Recommendations for optimal control in the workplace

1. Identify the risks

Perform a risk assessment to determine where and to what extent employees may be exposed. Consider specific tasks (e.g., cleaning sanitary facilities, working with animals), but also the general building condition (e.g., ventilation, moisture problems).

2. Take preventive measures

  • Ventilation and aeration: Ensure a constant supply of fresh air to reduce the concentration of microorganisms. Well-maintained mechanical ventilation systems are crucial in this regard.

  • Good hygiene: Promote hand hygiene and ensure regular and thorough cleaning of workplaces, sanitary facilities, and common areas.

  • Moisture control: Address moisture problems and mold formation immediately. Areas such as basements and sanitary facilities deserve extra attention.

3. Use personal protective equipment (PPE)

If exposure cannot be avoided at the source, provide the appropriate PPE, such as gloves, face masks, or respiratory protection. Ensure clear instructions and monitor correct use.

Legionella prevention

A specific risk that deserves special attention is the legionella bacterium. This can grow in stagnant water with a temperature between 25°C and 50°C, such as in pipes, showers, cooling towers, and air conditioning systems. When contaminated water droplets (aerosols) are inhaled, they can cause Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia. Installations that have not been used for a long time pose a particular risk. A preventive approach is therefore legally mandatory and essential for the health of your employees. Premed helps you carry out a risk assessment and can draw up a legionella management plan for your organisation.

Support by Premed

Premed helps your company identify and control the risks of biological agents. Our prevention advisers can carry out measurements (e.g. air or surface samples) and guide you through the risk assessment. Based on this, we draw up a concrete action plan, adapted to your specific situation. We also offer training to make your employees aware of the risks and the correct preventive measures.

Frequently asked questions

Biological agents in the workplace are understood to be micro-organisms or their toxic products that can be harmful to the health of employees. This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites or toxins that may be present in the air, on surfaces or in materials with which employees come into contact.

Examples include: salmonella bacteria in food processing, hepatitis B or C viruses in healthcare, fungi in damp buildings, or Legionella bacteria in cooling and spraying systems.
