According to a wellbeing survey by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) on teleworking (conducted during the first two weeks of the 'lockdown'), there is a significant increase in physical complaints among teleworkers. More than half of the respondents report new complaints in the neck (58%), shoulder (56%), and back (55%) compared to their normal physical condition. A poor working posture (in combination with insufficient movement) is detrimental to the human body. After this limited period of teleworking, it is already clear that more time needs to be invested in ergonomic provisions at home. To prevent persistent physical ailments among employees and to create clarity regarding IT and communication tools and furniture, it is best to establish a policy concerning teleworking.
The wellbeing act states that the employer has ultimate responsibility for the wellbeing of employees when carrying out their work, even if employees perform this work at a workplace not located within the premises of the employer's company or establishment.
What resources (laptop stand, keyboard, mouse…) does the employer provide, in what form, and what resources does the employee provide themselves? It is best to add this policy to the employment contract. Contact us for advice.
Do you want to check if screen workers telework in an ergonomically sound manner? Then be sure to use our display screen equipment risk assessment.
Since 2016, periodic medical examinations for display screen equipment workers are no longer mandatory. Instead, legislation requires a display screen equipment risk assessment to be carried out at least every 5 years. This analysis should evaluate the risks resulting from display screen work. Based on the results of the analysis, the employer must take appropriate measures. This tool is suitable for the teleworking situation. The teleworking situation can optionally be surveyed in combination with the office situation for comparison (option).
If you wish to carry out a risk assessment (at home and/or in the office) or if you require advice regarding a teleworking policy, please contact us for further information via info@premed.be. We will jointly map out a suitable trajectory based on your needs.
