Most people sit too much, both during and before or after work. Numerous scientific studies compared employees with and without sedentary jobs. This revealed five health benefits for employees who move more.

  1. Prolonged sitting is bad for your heart. In an experiment, researchers compared truck drivers, who sit all day at work, with conductors. Their eating habits and lifestyle were very similar. But the truck drivers were twice as likely to develop heart disease compared to the conductors. Moreover, prolonged sitting increases the risk of high blood pressure and blood clots. These health problems can be extra dangerous because they often do not come with complaints or symptoms.
  2. Prolonged sitting increases the risk of dementia. Research suggests that the brains of a person who sits still for a long time show similarities to the brains of a person with dementia.
  3. Employees with a sedentary job are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Scientists are not yet sure why this is, but they suspect that prolonged sitting causes a change in how your body responds to insulin.
  4. A bad sitting posture is bad for your back. Even with an ergonomic chair, prolonged sitting will strain your back. Prolonged sitting causes your glutes to become less active, forcing the muscles in your hips, neck, and shoulders to work harder. The message is to regularly alternate sitting with standing and walking.
  5. The more hours a day you spend sitting, the higher the chance you will get cancer. Scientific research has shown links between prolonged sitting and colon cancer, uterine cancer, and lung cancer.

Can you compensate for the health damage incurred by a sedentary job by exercising for an hour in the evening? There is no consensus on this in scientific research. In any case, health experts often agree with the following: "Exercising after work is good. But your health primarily benefits from regularly alternating sitting and moving. Therefore, it is important to incorporate that alternation during working hours."

Our offer

On-site optimization of individual workstation setups

One of our ergonomists will individually adjust the workstations together with your employees. It is not always easy to correctly set up your workstation yourself. Our ergonomists can take into account the possibilities of the workstation, the tasks to be performed, and the individuality of the employee to set up the workstation as optimally as possible.

Workshop 'Workstation setup'

In this interactive workshop, employees learn how to correctly organize their workstation (table, chair, screen, keyboard,) and which ergonomic principles are important to prevent complaints.

Workstation training

In this more extensive training, employees receive an overview of the risks of workstation work. Furthermore, it explains how musculoskeletal disorders (back, neck, shoulder, and wrist complaints) and eye strain can be prevented. Employees learn how to correctly set up their workstation and how to work comfortably at a workstation. In addition, relaxation exercises that can be performed during computer work are taught.
