After the autumn weather of recent months with a lot of wetness, winter has now also arrived with temperatures barely rising above freezing even during the day. Working outdoors in these conditions is a major challenge, but with these concrete tips, you are already well on your way to guaranteeing the safety and health of your employees.
Tip 1: ensure suitable clothing
Ensure that employees wear appropriate waterproof and breathable clothing. Work with different layers to retain heat well in these cold conditions. Well-insulated gloves and shoes with non-slip soles are also not an unnecessary luxury. And during these dark days, think of reflective materials, especially when working near traffic.
Tip 2: schedule more frequent breaks
Ensure sufficient breaks during work so that employees can warm up, preferably in a dry and heated room. In case of rainy weather and wet clothing, you should also encourage employees to change their clothes in between. You can also provide dry spare clothing if necessary.
Tip 3: emphasize the importance of nutrition and hydration
Eating and drinking is a primary need, and this is sometimes forgotten when the temperature drops. In such conditions, the body uses more energy to stay warm, so sufficient and nutritious food is crucial. Also, remind employees to keep drinking enough water to maintain hydration, even if the feeling of thirst is much less present.
Tip 4: adjust working hours and/or tasks
Keep a close eye on weather updates and do not hesitate to adjust the work schedule if possible. Employees can dress for the cold, but in the event of heavy rainfall or stormy weather, it may be wise to postpone certain activities or at least take additional safety measures. For example, avoid working under trees or at height during extremely windy weather.
Tip 5: organize safety trainings
Awareness is essential for taking and properly following precautionary measures. Therefore, ensure that your employees are aware of the dangers that working in extreme conditions entails and which (safety) procedures must be observed in that case.
By applying these practical tips, your employees will be better equipped against cold and wet weather while their well-being remains guaranteed!
