As a society, we must recognize that ergonomics is not a side issue, but an integral part of ensuring the health and well-being of employees.

In a world where technologies and work methods are constantly evolving, the physical strain on employees remains a continuous concern. According to a report by the Federal Public Service for Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue (2022), work-related musculoskeletal disorders, often caused by a lack of ergonomics, lead to more than 2 million days of sick leave per year in Belgium.

In addition, research from KU Leuven shows that musculoskeletal disorders are responsible for almost 30% of all cases of long-term absenteeism in the country. In 2020, musculoskeletal disorders accounted for more than a third (36.5%) of all recognized occupational diseases in Belgium.

When workplaces are not adapted to the needs of employees, this can lead to repetitive strain injuries, back problems, and other physical issues that develop over time. Ergonomics plays a crucial role within organisations to avoid long-term illnesses caused by physical strain. By applying ergonomic principles, employers can reduce the risks of musculoskeletal disorders.

In addition to reducing absenteeism, promoting ergonomics in the workplace can also lead to higher productivity and employee engagement. Employees who feel comfortable and suffer less from pain and discomfort are generally more motivated and can concentrate better on their tasks.

As a society, we must recognize that ergonomics is not a side issue, but an integral part of ensuring the health and well-being of employees. By investing in ergonomic solutions and promoting a culture of safety and health in the workplace, we can see a significant improvement in the quality of life of employees and the overall productivity of organisations.
